Children in Haiti Who Need Families

Most children are 5-13 years old at the time of placement and living in institutions.
Most have medical and developmental special needs. Learn more about Disabilities & Medical Conditions in Special Needs Adoption.
Children may be HIV positive or have suffered from trauma, abuse or neglect.
Sibling groups are in need of families, especially when at least one sibling is older than 6.
More boys than girls are waiting for families.

Eligibility Requirements & Fees

Eligibility Requirements to Adopt from Haiti

Parent’s Age

If parents have been married at least five years, only one parent needs to be 30 or older.
If parents are married less than five years, both must be 30-50.
Single applicants must be at least 35.
For both single and married applicants, the upper age limit is 50 years.

Length of Marriage

Applicants must be married for at least five years at the time of application.
Proven cohabitation may be counted towards the length of marriage.
Unmarried applicants with documented cohabitation of at least five years may also be eligible.

Divorce

For married couples or single applicants, one divorce each is accepted.

Children in Family

There is no regulation regarding children already in the home.

Single Applicant

Single women between 35 and 50 years of age are eligible.
Applicants 48+ years of age should contact the Haiti program prior to applying.

Travel

Two trips are required for the Haiti program.
The first trip lasts two weeks and occurs 3-4 weeks after a family or single applicant is matched with a child.
The second trip occurs 12-13 months after the first trip and will last approximately one week.

How Long It Takes

From application through placement, the estimated time frame is approximately 4-5 years.

Fees for Haiti Adoption

We are open and transparent about our fees and want you to be aware of all potential costs involved in an adoption, including third-party costs and travel.

Holt is a Christian, private, nonprofit, licensed and accredited child welfare and family service organization. Our adoption work is entirely financed through adoption fees and donations. It is not government subsidized. We believe that children are the highest priority, and we want as many children as possible to have families. To that end, we strive to keep our fees within a reasonable range. All fees are subject to change and are charged at the rate that is current at time of billing. Holt may increase fees if adoption expenses in the foreign country increase substantially after time of application. Families will be notified in writing of any fee increase. Holt International accepts the following for adoption fees: check, cashier’s check or money order. If you would like to pay by credit card, there will be a 3% convenience fee added to your total. Fees due upon invoice.

Due when you accept the assignment of a child. In the case of siblings, Agency Fee 3 is increased by $3,815 per child and an additional $9,500 will be charged for each child to cover the pass-through fees.

What does “special needs” mean?

How long does it take to adopt from Haiti?

Since there are many families on the list of approved applicants, waiting for a child referral may be the longest part of the process for your family. Typically, families receive a referral one to two years from when their dossier is submitted to and approved by the central adoption authority in Haiti. Once you are matched with a child, it will take anywhere from 6–12 months to complete rest of process.
