A New Home and a New Stove

One family in Mongolia was facing another winter in a drafty old home. But now they have a new home and a new stove to keep them warm! 

Winter in Mongolia is brutally cold with icy winds that come off the Siberian Plain and nighttime temperatures that frequently drop to -40 degrees. Families without proper shelter suffer the worst. 

When we met one young mother and her children, they were facing another long winter in an old home that was falling apart. It was a traditional, circular Mongolian home — a ger — that she rented for $14 per month. In total, she earned just $58 per month to feed and care for her two young children. 

“We continue to be so blessed by the generosity and compassion of all of you. Without you, none of this would have been possible, nor could our goals to serve even more children and families ever be realized.”

Thankfully, at the time, a group of donors with big hearts was traveling to Mongolia to see how they could help children and families in greatest need. Hearing of this mother’s plight, they decided to buy a new home for her and her children! 

Right away, Holt’s team in Mongolia began building the family’s new ger, with thick insulated walls and space for a stove in the middle. The donors also provided a new stove to heat their home all winter long! 

“The need is immense in Mongolia. While it can feel at times so overwhelming, acts like this help to uplift not only those we serve, but also the hearts of all of us working here,” says Paul Kim, Holt’s program director for Korea and Mongolia. “We continue to be so blessed by the generosity and compassion of all of you.
